The Varsity icers took 5 out of 6 points this weekend in their most
important conference weekend this year. The Titans beat Findlay and
Bowling Green at their rinks and tied their rival St. Francis.
The weekend started with a game at Findlay; always a tough place
to play. SJJ started out quickly with three goals in the first. They
added three more in the second and scored two late third period
goals to grab an 8-1 victory. The Johnson, Hauenstein, Parsell line,
finally all healthy, got back on track with Hauenstein getting a hat
trick and Johnson adding two of his own. Noah Ryan scored his first
career goal to cap the scoring. Steven Schmitt played two solid
periods and Luc Gibb played a perfect third period.
On Saturday night, SJJ took on rival St. Francis in front of a
sold out crowd. As usual, the game lived up to it’s billing. It
turned out to be a very physical game with big hits from both sides.
George Wilkinson scored the games first goal early in the second to
give the Titans a 1-0 lead. SFS finally tied the score early in the
third right off a faceoff. Late in the third, Ray Morris beat his
defenseman wide and drove to the net to give the Titans another
lead. The lead was short lived as the Knights tied it 30 seconds
later. The game went to overtime with both teams getting a few good
chances. Neither team was able to break the tie and the game would
end 2-2. Steven Schmitt was very solid in net making several key
saves.
On Sunday, SJJ traveled to Bowling Green to play it’s third game
in three days. The Titans came out very strong early outshooting the
Bobcats 14-2 in the first period. They were not able to beat the BG
goalie and the first period ended 0-0. The varsity icers finally got
on the board when George Wilkinson scored midway through the 2nd. A
tired SJJ team was able make that one goal count as Christian Davis
and Luc Gibb teamed up to shut out the Bobcats 1-0. The victory kept
SJJ in the hunt for the conference championship with some very
important games coming up. Let’s make every game count. |
