January 12-14, 2007. The Varsity
Titans hosted their annual Titan Invitational Tournament January
12th through the 14th. Overall, they had a successful weekend
although they were unable to defend their championship. London, ON
Mother Theresa won the tournament beating Elyria Catholic in the
finals 5-3.
The Titans got
out to a quick start in the tournament beating Cincinnati Moeller
7-1 in the opening game Friday evening. The Titans were able to
keep the offense rolling on Saturday morning as they beat a young
Garfield Heights Trinity 10-2. That set up what would be considered
a semifinal match against a very talented Mother Theresa team.
Mother Theresa also made quick work of Trinity and Moeller as they
beat both by 10 goals in their first two games. The match up ended
up being a good one as both teams battled hard, literally. After
falling behind 2-1 after the 1st period, the Titans rallied in the
second to take a 3-2 lead after two. The period took its toll as
Mother Theresa didn’t take the lead change well and tried taking the
Titans off their game with physical play. The Titans lost two
players to extracurricular activities and weren’t on their game to
start the third period. Two quick Spartan goals gave Mother Theresa
the lead back and the Titans ended up on the losing end of a 5-3
score.
The loss put the
Titans in the Consolation game against a much improved Cincinnati
St. Xavier team. The Titans took control of the game early and was
able to pull away from St. Xavier beating them 4-1. All in all a
good weekend for the Titans as they improved their record to 15-6-3
overall.
The Titans had
several players turn in strong performances for the weekend. Danny
Johnson and Andrew Heldt led the way with six goals and ten points;
four goals and nine points respectively. Also contributing was
Shane Hetrick with four goals and eight points; and Chase Parsell
with three goals and seven points. Mike Callan, just back from an
injury that’s kept him out all year also contributed with a goal and
four assists.
Nice job to
everyone. |
