titans finish 2nd at mt. lebanon tournament

February 3, 2007. The Varsity Titans traveled to Pittsburgh this weekend to play in the Mt. Lebanon Invitational tournament and finished 2nd.  After going 3-0 in the preliminary rounds, the Titans lost 1-0 to host Mt. Lebanon in the finals.

St. John’s Jesuit started off quickly in the tournament by beating Mentor Lake Catholic 4-3 as Danny Johnson registered a hat trick.  The Titans came back the next morning to play host Mt. Lebanon who also registered a victory in their opening game.  SJJ found themselves down 1-0 after two periods.  They came out in the third and were able to finally break through with two goals to win 2-1.  Tyler Marzec was sharp in net with 20 saves.  Shane Hetrick and Danny Johnson scored for the Titans.

In the evening contest the Titans took on Erie McDowell.  Once again, it took a while to get the offense clicking but they were able to skate away with a 3-1 victory.  Mike Henson, Shane Hetrick and Ray Morris scored for SJJ and Steve Schmitt was very strong in net with 20 saves for the victory.  That put the varsity Titans in the finals against Mt. Lebanon who’s only loss was to SJJ.  Once again the game was evenly played with both teams playing strong defensive games.  Also once again, the Titans found themselves down 1-0 after two periods.  This time they were unable to find the back of the net.  SJJ did hit the post with about three minutes to play and they were able to put a lot of pressure on Mt. Lebanon’s defense but it wasn’t enough as the varsity Titans were shut out for the first time this season 1-0.  Tyler Marzec, once again, was very sharp in net making 20 saves in the loss.  The 3-1-0 weekend make the Titans 22-7-3 for the season heading into the playoffs.  Good luck the rest of the way and let’s all stay focused.
