SJJ Titan Hockey History

The St. John Jesuit Titan hockey team was started in 1972 as a club sport. The first coaches were Frank Landry, Ron Miller, and Joe Czernicki. Miller and Czernicki were teachers at St. John's Jesuit.  Practice was held on a hand made rink built by the team members under the direction of Chris Anderson ‘72.

In 1973 the Titan hockey program gained varsity status as Cosimo Figolomeni took the reins. Financial assistance from Joe Czernicki, enabled the young program to purchase their first uniforms. The first teams played a twelve game schedule in the Metro Conference. The Titan hockey team joined the now-defunct, City League for the 1974-75 season. The program steadily grew and the Titan hockey team achieved rapid success. St. John Jesuit earned their first an only City League title in the 1977-78 season.

The Titans joined the Northwest Hockey Conference (NHC) as a charter member in the 1979-80 season. St. John’s Jesuit hockey has had considerable success in league play having won titles in 1985, 1988, 1989, and 2007 and posting second place finishes in 1998, 2000, 2001, 2004, and 2006.

St. John’s Jesuit has made appearances in the State Frozen Four on thirteen occasions, winning the State Championship in 2007. In the 1998-1999 season, St. John’s Jesuit  played for and won the state championship game, however, when the Titans discovered that one of their players had violated a OHSAA bylaw, they forfeited the game and the state title.
