Mike Hayes, Head Varsity Coach

Mike is entering his sixth season as coach of the Titans.  In his first five seasons, the Titans have a record of 111-48-12.  Also in those five seasons, they have one NHC Championship (2007), one District Runner-up (2005), one District Championship (2007) and was the first Toledo school to officially win the Ohio State Championship (2007).  He also received Coach of the Year honors in the NHC in 2007.  Previous to coaching at SJJ, Mike served as a coach in the SMAHL travel program for four years.  His teams experienced a lot of success over those four seasons including a Little Caesar’s championship and a Regional Silver Sticks title.  He also led a Bantam A travel team (7th and 8th graders) to a victory over Anthony Wayne’s Varsity team in 2003.  He is still heavily involved in USA Hockey.  He has served as both a coach and an evaluator in the Midwest District’s select camps over the last six years.

Mike is a graduate of Whitmer High School and the University of Toledo.  At Whitmer, he played three years of varsity hockey and was captain of Whitmer’s 83-84 State Runner- up team that went 29-2-1 that season.  Mike was also an All-State baseball player at Whitmer and is in Whitmer’s Athletic Hall of Fame.  He played college baseball at the University of Toledo.  He received his bachelor’s degree in Communications.

“Hockey is a passion to me.  Growing up, hockey helped forge several lifelong friendships, experiences and great memories.  Being the coach at SJJ, I want to help the players that play here get that same opportunity.  That, and win a state championship every year!”

This past year has been a busy year for Mike.  This past fall he married his lovely wife Rita.  This past summer, they welcomed their first daughter, Mia into the world.

Markus Rasmus, Assistant Varsity Coach

Markus is entering his ninth season as a member of the St. John’s coaching staff.  From 2001 through 2003 Markus was an assistant coach on the where he worked with the defenseman.  From 2003-2005 he spent two seasons as the Head Coach of the Junior Varsity team.  Over the past four years he has been an assistant on the Varsity team with his focus on the forwards.  He was an assistant coach on St. John’s first official State Championship in 2007.

Markus is a 1996 graduate of St. John’s Jesuit, he earned four varsity letters while playing defense for the Titans.  During Markus’ freshman and sophomore seasons (1993 and 1994) the Titans reached the state final four.  Markus graduated in 2000 from The Ohio State University with a degree in finance.   While at Ohio State he played club hockey.  Markus works as a commercial real estate agent with CB Richard Ellis Reichle Klein.

Jason Szynkowski, Assistant Varsity Coach

This will be Jason’s seventh season coaching, and his third year teaching at SJJ. Previously, Jason played both varsity and club hockey for Miami of Ohio while working towards a Bachelor’s of Science in Middle Childhood Education which he earned in 2002. In addition, Jason coached two seasons of club hockey for the Red Hawks while pursuing a Master’s degree in Sports Administration as a graduate assistant.  A seasoned speaker for USA Hockey Coaches clinics, Jason’s hockey experience also extends to summer hockey schools where, after nine years, he continues to travel the Midwest working Miami’s School, Defensemen Specialty Camps, and Checking/Scoring Specialty Camps as both coach and director.

Ben Harley, Goalie Coach

This will be Ben’s tenth season in charge of SJJ’s goaltenders. He feels that working with goalies one on one and his willingness to suit up during practices is fundamental for goaltender development. He began his coaching career with TOYHA and SMAHL.

Todd Switala, Video Coach

This will be Todd's 2nd year as video coach in charge of the teams Gamebraker Coding System. This offers a unique opportunity to help to assist the coaches in breaking down the game and help focus on player understating of the systems. Todd has a son Nicholas that is now in the hockey program. Todd was the head JV coach at SJJ from 1996-2002 and previously was the head coach at Central Catholic for 4 years. As an alumni of the program, Todd is excited to be back with the premiere program in the state.

Matthew Rotte, Varsity Team Manager

Matt is currently a sophomore at St. Johns. This is his second year with the Titan Hockey program. Besides being the manager, he enjoys playing soccer, basketball, and lacrosse.
