Mike Hayes, Head Varsity Coach

Mike will be entering his 9th season as coach of the Titans. Coach Hayes, in his first 8 seasons, has a record of 180-79-20. During his tenure, Coach Hayes has 2 Frozen Four appearances. His 2007 team was the first team to officially win the Ohio State Championship in the Toledo area. His 2009 team was state runners up. Coach Hayes has also guided SJJ to four District Final appearances, winning two (2007 & 2009) and finishing runners up twice (2004 & 2011). During those 8 years, the Titans also have two NHC championships in 2007 and 2009. Coach Hayes was Coach of the Year in the NHC in 2007.

Previous to coaching at St. John’s Jesuit, Mike served as a coach in the SMAHL travel program for four years. His teams had a lot of success over those four seasons including a Little Caesar’s championship and a Regional Silver Sticks title. He also led a Bantam travel team (7th and 8th graders) to a victory over Anthony Wayne’s varsity team in 2003.

Mike is still heavily involved in USA Hockey as he has served as both a coach and an evaluator in the Mid Am District Select Camps over the last 10 years. Mike has also served as a speaker/presenter at USA Hockey’s Coaches Clinics in the Mid Am District over the last three years.

Coach Hayes is a graduate of both Whitmer High School and the University of Toledo. Coach Hayes played hockey for three seasons at Whitmer and captained the 1983-84 team to a state runners up finish and a 29-2-1 season. Mike was also an All-State baseball player at Whitmer and is a two time inductee into Whitmer’s Athletic Hall of Fame, once as a player (hockey and baseball) and once as part of the 1983-84 hockey team. Mike went on to play college baseball at the University of Toledo where he earned a BA degree in Communications. “Hockey is a passion to me. Growing up, hockey helped forge several lifelong friendships, experiences and great memories. As the coach at SJJ, I want to help every player accomplish those same experiences, memories and friendships.” Mike and his wife Rita have two daughters, Mia and Lola. Mike is employed at Harbor as a Vocational Specialist/Job Developer.

Jason Szynkowski, Assistant Varsity Coach

Jason joined the St. Johns coaching staff prior to the 2003/04 season. Since then, Jason has primarily worked with the defenseman while also focusing on skating and skill development. A year after joining the St. John's hockey family, Jason became part of the titan's academic family working for St. John's Jesuit Academy, teaching 7th and 8th grade math. Previous to St. John's, Jason played both varsity and club hockey for Miami University where he won a club national championship and was a repeat ACHA All-American. During this time Jason earned a Bachelor's of Science degree in Middle Childhood Education. In addition, Jason coached two seasons of club hockey for the Red Hawks while pursuing a Master's degree in Sports History/Administration as a graduate assistant. A seasoned speaker for USA Hockey Coaches clinics, Jason's hockey experience also extends to summer hockey schools where, for over a decade, he continues to travel the Midwest working Miami's School, Defensemen Specialty Camps, and Checking/Scoring Specialty Camps as both coach and director. Also a product of AAA and Jr-hockey experiences, Jason brings a unique perspective and guidance to the titan players. Originally from Toledo, Jason and his wife, Betsy, continue to live in town.

Dan Isenhath is entering his second season as a member of the St. John’s coaching staff. During the 2009-2010 season, Dan worked with the team by implementing an off-ice conditioning program as well as assisting the coaching staff during practices.

Dan is a 2002 graduate of St. John’s Jesuit where he earned three varsity letters while playing forward for the Titans. After high school, Dan played two seasons of Junior A hockey for the Dayton Gems and Toledo Wolfpack. Dan graduated from the university of Dayton in 2006 with a degree in Physical Education. After college, Dan played three seasons of Single A professional hockey for the Findlay Freedom, Wooster Warriors, Battle Creek Revolution and Detroit Hitmen.
